Well here’s some fantastic news: the Wet Hot American Summer miniseries is a go.
After weeks of reports that the follow-up to the 2001 cult comedy was brewing, Netflix confirmed today that an 8-episode miniseries is a done deal.
In fact, filming already began this week. David Wain and Michael Showalter, who wrote the movie, wrote the miniseries, with Wain also reprising his duties as director. The absurdly hilarious film is notable for its great cast full of fresh faces that would go on to later success, and the best news out of this Netflix deal is that virtually the entire original ensemble is returning.
Per Deadline, actors poised to reprise their roles in the Wet Hot American Summer miniseries include Elizabeth Banks, Paul Rudd, Bradley Cooper, Amy Poehler, Molly Shannon, Joe Lo Truglio, Janeane Garafolo, Marguerite Moreau, Michael Ian Black, David Hyde Pierce, H. Jon Benjamin, Judah Friedlander, Nina Hellman, Zak Orth, A.D. Miles, Marisa Ryan, Kevin Sussman, Showalter, and last but not least, Christopher Meloni.
This is amazing news for fans of the original film, which gets better and better upon each rewatch. There are no details regarding the plot of this eight-episode miniseries just yet, but Wain and Co. have been trying to get a follow-up off the ground for years, with one of their ideas being a prequel in which the 40-year-old actors would play even younger versions of their characters.
Whatever it is, I’ll be binge-watching the hell out of it come premiere time. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go fondle my sweaters.
